NGC 2174 was discovered in 1877 by Jean Marie Stephan. Also known as the Monkey Head is a large molecular cloud, whose dominant emission is in the hydrogen alpha wavelength, which is ionized by the energy of the bright stars in the star cluster in its midst, NGC2175. They are thought to be about 6400 light years away from us. It lies very close to the border with Gemini, only two degrees southwest of supernova remnant IC 443, and four degrees due south of open cluster M35.
